Migraines are a type of chronic headache that cause moderate to severe throbbing head pain. The pain may last a few hours or a few days and cause other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light.
Though anyone can develop migraines, you may be at greater risk if they run in your family, or you suffer from other medical conditions such as depression, anxiety, or sleep disorders. Migraines also tend to affect women more often than men.
Migraine symptoms develop in stages. However, not everyone who suffers from migraines experiences all the stages. Migraine stages and symptoms include:
Prodrome symptoms may appear 24 hours before your head pain and include food cravings, mood changes, fluid retention, or increased urination.
With aura symptoms, you may see flashes of light or experience muscle weakness. Your aura symptoms may occur before or during your headache.
Migraine headache symptoms include moderate to severe throbbing. It usually only affects one area of your head.
Postdrome When your migraine headache resolves, you may go through the postdrome stage, which can include fatigue and feelings of confusion. Your postdrome symptoms may last up to 24 hours.
You can expect a comprehensive evaluation when you come to Release Integrative Medicine for the management of your migraines. The goal of your evaluation is to find and fix the underlying cause of your head pain.
During your evaluation, your provider asks detailed questions about your symptoms, including the time of occurrence, location, type of pain, triggers, and the remedies that provide relief.
Your provider then reviews your health history and performs a physical exam to determine how and why your body’s vital energy, or Qi, is out of balance.
Qi is an important concept in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. It flows through meridians and provides nourishment to all the organs in your body. An imbalance or blockage in the flow of Qi may result in physical symptoms like migraine headaches.
If appropriate, your acupuncturist inserts sterile needles at specific points along your meridian pathway to restore Qi flow and balance. During an acute phase, these needles will be probably place along the offending meridian, but far away from the painful area. Combining acupuncture with auricular medicine offers insight into the root cause and provides direct relief with frequency specific microcurrent or photo therapy.
Depending upon your reaction, acupuncture isn’t a quick fix for migraines, and your provider may recommend a series of acupuncture treatments. Your acupuncturist’s goal is to tailor your treatment plan according to your reaction to the previous session. Each treatment will be both therapeutic AND diagnostic. They may also recommend other therapies to optimize your health and wellness, such as:
