What is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)?

Your TMJ is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. The sliding hinge joint allows you to move your jaw up and down and side to side.

The flexibility and regular use of your TMJ may increase your risk of pain in the joint or the surrounding muscles. These tightening muscles may block signals from other parts of the body from reaching the brain possibly causing body pain even before you get out of bed. TMJ pain is common and can develop after an injury or from arthritis.

You are at greater risk of TMJ pain or TMJ disorder if it runs in your family.

What are TMJ disorder symptoms?

TMJ disorder symptoms vary in type and severity. Your symptoms may include:

  • Jaw pain and tenderness
  • Decreased mobility
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Locking of the jaw joint

You may also experience a clicking sound or sensation in the joint when you open and close your mouth.

What can I expect during a TMJ evaluation?

You can expect a comprehensive evaluation when you come in for the treatment of your TMJ disorder at Release Integrative Medicine. The acupuncture and Chinese and auricular medicine practice focuses on finding the root cause of your pain, so you get the most effective treatment.

During your exam, your provider asks detailed questions about your symptoms, when they occur, the type of pain you feel, and the treatments you’ve tried to alleviate your discomfort. Your provider then reviews your health history and performs a physical.

With Chinese medicine, the focus is on the flow of Qi, or vital energy, throughout your body. Your Qi flows through pathways called meridians that supply energy and nourishment to your organs, tissues, and cells. Any change in flow or blockage affects vital organs and may cause symptoms like TMJ pain.
